John James TwistOn February 10, 1872 the Reverend JJ Twist, the recently widowed curate of the neighbouring parish of Birch, joined the building committed of the new church then underway at Fallowfield — he was then invited to become Rector. He established the congregation at Holy Innocents’, including notable civic leaders, setting high standards for worship; an inheritance we have kept and cherished. He built schools at Ladybarn and, later, adjacent to the church (now the Queen of Hearts). He oversaw the building of the Rectory at 2 Wilbraham Road (left redundant in 1979 and now demolished), and in church a spire, a vestry and an organ. This programme of continuous enlargement and improvement was an uphill struggle, for the congregation, though well heeled, was not generous. Holy Innocents prospered but at the expense of the Rector’s health. He resigned in 1895 and died two years later having been cared for by his wife’s sister, Miss Dewes, who had been his housekeeper and cared for his five children since their mother’s death.
